UNC nurses take part in premature baby simulation

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

For a premature baby, having its diaper changed and getting hooked up to machines can be a bit overwhelming.

Nurses at UNC Hospitals NICU learned what it was like to be a premature baby through a special simulation.

Just like their tiny patients, nurses were woken up from their rest, had their diaper changed and were then hooked up to noisy equipment.

The simulation allowed the nurses to gain a better sense of how stressful those things can be on a premature baby.

"I kind of could anticipate what was coming, but I didn't know when it was coming or which direction it was coming from or who was doing it, how forceful it was going to be. It was pretty overwhelming," said Tina Evans, a NICU nurse at UNC.

Nurses at UNC said they will now perform tasks one at a time with both hands on the baby. They also plan to slow down the process so that it's easier for the babies
