Congressman Jones visits Creekside Elementary

Posted: Updated:

Tuesday morning Walter B. Jones visited fourth graders at Creekside Elementary School in Winterville.

Jones spoke to the group about government and the constitution. Students also had an opportunity to ask the congressman questions.

Jones told 9 On Your Side how he values these school visits, “I have made it a policy of our office for the last 20 years that if a school says we would like you to come speak to a class then I will make that happen sometime before the years over.”

The congressman hopes his visit impacted the students saying he hopes it will “make them understand that learning and about our government is important.” Jones continued “Do I think they will remember in the details of anything I talked about, from the numbers in the house - to the numbers in the senate, but if they would take one thing home and tell mom and dad ‘I heard a congressman come speak today and tell me really what he really does’ that in itself is important.”

9 On Your Side also asked the congressman about the impact of the affordable care act on the students. “I would hope we in the house have done the best job we could do to stop this failure, and it is a failure. I can't think of a better word because it is a failure. I would hope that the Senate will understand when they are home in the Thanksgiving break and they are hearing from their people in the state of North Carolina and the other 49 states.  I think they should just stop it where it is quite frankly and revisit this issue because it's not working and I'm sorry to say it's not going work.”
