Pre-Winter Storm leaves Thirteen Dead

Posted: Updated:
New Mexico -

A powerful storm system is blamed for at least 13 deaths..
It is already causing major headaches for holiday travelers.
ABC's John Muller reports...

The storm system has gripped a wide swath of the nation in a pre-winter cold
snap.. the northeast is getting hit.. after
New Mexico got dumped with a foot and a half of snow.

Few interstates were spared from treacherous conditions.. including this one
in oklahoma city.. where an s-u-v rollover was caught on dash-cam video..
"Hang on gotta let you go."

No one was hurt in that rollover.

But in south central pennsylvania.. a 77-year-old woman was killed in multi-
vehicle pileup.
Carla Lehman / Witness:
"There were guys that had this huge, huge, white truck that was pulling a van out of the median, like people really did come together to help one
another."

Also coming together,  first-responders in western New York, coming from
four counties to rescue a hunter who became trapped in waist-deep water.

And in Noble, Oklahoma, a very different kind of rescue.
A flock of tiny ruddy  ducks, their wings iced,
literally falling from the sky towards what they apparently thought was
glistening water but was really ice on the road.

Rondi Large /WildCare Director:
"The edges of their beak have got very bad bruising and bleeding on the end
of the beaks so they must have, um, nosedived."

As the storm system moves through the southwest,  hundreds of flights were
canceled at Dallas-Fort Worth as crews scrambled to de-ice the planes.

But in the mountains of Nevada, not everyone is seeing the two feet of snow
as necessarily a bad thing.

"You having fun?  Yes! How excited were they to get out here?  Oh
my gosh.  They kept yelling at me, 'Pull over, Mom!  Now now now!"
John Muller, ABC News, New York.
