Residents React to Death of Missing Barnwell, SC Surgeon

Posted: Updated:
Barnwell County, SC -

Dr. Charles Mann was a surgeon at the Barnwell County Hospital -- working to better the health and lives of patients in a rural area. That work was cut short this week.

William Harley, a Barnwell SC resident shares "it's really broken my heart that someone that is a doctor -- trying to help other people -- then someone to go take his life. "

Richmond County investigators believe that someone is 22 year old Glenn Riggs the second. The Sheriff's office says Dr. Mann was murdered at Riggs' home before his body was dumped in a creek. Riggs is being charged with criminal trespass, simple battery, robbery by force and murder. Neighbors of the 22 year old suspect say they don't believe those charges are far fetched

One neighbor, Bianca Willingham explains "I never put a doubt in my mind that he wouldn't do something like this because if you can fight your own father, you can do anything to anyone else."

As news about the charges spread, viewers on our Facebook page started to ask about the motive and details about the crime; asking questions like: "Did he hijack his car, take the Dr to his house and then killed him or what?" and "He was at the suspects house… sounds like a drug deal and robbery to me. A set up. Sad." When the police cars showed up-- neighbors say they were asking the same questions.

Willingham adds "at first I thought they were just coming to pick up some young people. -- you know breaking in houses and doing things like that. Once I found out they were coming for him and what they came for, I was kind of like mm..."

Regardless of what happened, neighbors and others tell me they hope this case can be closed and Dr. Mann's family can start to heal.

Barnwell resident, Nick Toole, chimes in "I'll certainly just be thinking and praying for he and his family and other folks that might've been involved as well."

Richmond County investigators say because the case is still open, they cannot release all of the details about the crime. Vincent Riggs is being held in the Richmond County jail for robbery by force and murder.
