John F. Kennedy Remembered On 50th Anniversary Of His Assassination

Dallas, TX -

The 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy's assassination is being marked Friday in Dallas, where he was shot, and elsewhere in the United States and overseas.

A half-dozen Irish soldiers formed a guard of honor outside the U.S. Embassy in Dublin Friday as the American flag was lowered to half-staff. Among those who gathered there were more than a dozen retired Irish army officers who, as teenage cadets, had formed an honor guard at Kennedy's graveside when he was buried in November of 1963.

One of them recalled seeing the dignitaries from around the world who attended the funeral -- and also "the sadness everywhere, people crying in the streets."

In Japan, admirers of JFK took photos today with his portrait, folded paper cranes and watched a video of his inaugural ceremony. Kennedy's daughter, Caroline, recently arrived to an enthusiastic welcome in Tokyo, where she is now the U.S. ambassador to Japan.

Memorial events are planned today in Boston and in Washington, as well as in Dealey Plaza in Dallas.

Starting at 12:30 p.m., ABCNews.com will be live streaming a digital special here.
