They're an important part of Broad Street downtown, the dozens of trees that provide shade and beauty. They're pretty with the leaves changing, but also pretty messy.
"It looks bad. Basically, it just looks bad. Nice on the trees, but on the ground sloppy," says Candace Blake, who works on Broad Street.
Last Fall, the CADI cleanup crews were in charge of cleaning up the leaves, but now there's no CADI.
Augusta Commissioners rejected continuing the program in December, and again in April, because of insufficient support from downtown property owners who paid the bill through a special tax. But, all those downtown trees are still changing for the season.
"The leaves were not around, now as they were when CADI was here. That's the way things are, that's the way it was supposed to be. You didn't notice it and the leaves are everywhere," says Sanford Loyd, a member of the Downtown Development Authority and CADI supporter.
"This is when you really begin to see what they did, the trash is accumulating," says Margaret Woodard, of the Downtown Development Authority.
And, now that the leaves are falling, some of CADI's work is being missed.
"The safety issue is what concerns me. We don't want anybody falling down here when the leaves get so full like they are right now. It's very slippery," says Ooollee Bricker.
As a downtown business owner, Bricker feels the leaves are an issue, but she didn't support keeping CADI. She and other businesses are cleaning leaves in front of their shops that end up in the curb. She says the street sweepers come by, but cars parked on Broad Street get in the way. "You can see right there, where he had to go around a car, so they can't get everything. If we just get the right process in place, we can fix it," she says.
There's no stopping the leaves from turning and falling, but there was a stop to the cleanup program that took care of them.
"This year is just messy and sloppy . They need to hire them back or something," says Blake.
Bricker would like to see Augusta follow Savannah's lead and designate different sections of downtown no parking zones during different times overnight. This way, there would be no cars in the way of the street sweepers.
