There will soon be a new way to get to the Augusta Canal. Commissioners have approved a zoning change to allow for a 43 car gravel parking lot near the city pumping station. Canal Authority officials say the lot will be landscaped with trees and ornamental fencing. They add that it will be a safer and more attractive gateway to the historic waterway.
"This will allow people to cross a wooden footbridge across the canal rather than a going across the rickety metal crossing between the two water lines that are currently across from the raw water pumping station," said Dayton Sherrouse, Canal Authority.
The Canal Authority will spend $160,000 on the parking lot and landscaping. They hope to have the work done early 2014.
