Baby Lions in Atlanta

Posted: Updated:
Atlanta, GA (AP) -

An African lion at Atlanta's zoo has given birth to four cubs.

Zoo Atlanta says 9-year-old Kiki had her second litter on Tuesday. The father is 9-year-old Kamau.

Veterinarians at the zoo had confirmed Kiki's pregnancy by ultrasound on Oct. 28. Lion gestation is usually three to four months long, and litters generally range from one to five cubs.

Lion cubs are born blind and depend entirely on their mothers for care and protection. They usually stay with their mothers for 18 months. Kiki's new cubs will bond with their mother in an off-exhibit space and likely won't venture into their African Plains habitat for about two months.

Kiki and Kamau's previous litter in 2008 included males Christos, Mikalos and Athanaisi, who now live at Africam Safari in Puebla, Mexico.
