EDGEFIELD, SC -
Strom Thurmond head coach Lee Sawyer says he normally doesn't like surprises. Well this morning, he received a big one - but a very large check, helped soften the blow.
Sawyer was named the Carolina Panthers Coach of the Week, an honor he did not learn of until Strom Thurmond principal Jill Jett called him down to the Rebel Fieldhouse for a special presentation.
Panthers mascot Sir Purr and WJBF's Scott Skadan were on hand to present Sawyer with a check for $1000, completely catching the coach off guard.
Sawyer says he's grateful for the honor, but nothing would be possible without his players.
"Every group I've ever had since 2004 here means the world to me," coach Sawyer said. "I don't think you have this everywhere, for some reason we just have a special relationship. It's just different."
Coach Sawyer will also be honored prior to the Carolina Panthers home game on Sunday, December 22nd against the New Orleans Saints. He and 11 other "Carolina Panthers Coaches of the Week" will all be recognized, and one of the 12 coaches will win an additional $2000 if they are named the "Carolina Panthers Coach of the Year."
