Mountain City, TN (WJHL) -

A former Mountain City police officer wants his side of the story told after being fired for spraying mace and shooting at a squirrel.

Tuesday night we told you about witness statements from the day Mountain City Police Officer Jody Putnam responded to a call at the Dollar General.

What happened inside ended up costing him his job.

Putnam wrote a description of his view of the events. He told News Channel 11 an employee asked him to spray mace on the animal and later shoot it.

Putnam said he told her quote "with the type of ammo I carried that shooting the animal with that ammo would be overkill." He said when he did shoot the squirrel wanted to stun it, not kill it.

Putman said he had "to make a judgement call" and did everything he could to make sure "no human life was in jeopardy."
