While our servicemen and women protect our freedoms and ability to spend the holidays safe with our families, many of them are away from their families and need a little extra cheer.
That's where the American Red Cross comes in. Holiday Mail for Heroes is a program to send our overseas troops holiday cards.
Some students from Curtis Baptist joined Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver and Fort Gordon's Major General, LaWarren Patterson to make handmade cards to send to soldiers.
They say a little note from a small child can make a big difference to a soldier.
"I think it'll be a great feeling: They get letters from home, from family, but to know the children are coming out and saying 'thank you' to them and to people they don't know, that's great," Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver said. "One percent of our country volunteers to protect the rest of us, so I think anything we can do for them is a great thing."
You can send a card too! The must be postmarked no later than December 6th. You shouldn't include pictures, money, or any other items. Be sure to sign the card to your soldier.
