Turner Field Neighbors, Shocked By Atlanta Braves Move

Atlanta, GA -

It's far from being a done deal, but the Atlanta Braves are talking of building a new stadium in Cobb County.  And many of those who consider the Braves neighbors are shocked.  Richard Elliot has more.

"Stunned.  The wind knocked out of me," said Suzanne Mitchell, Organized neighbors of Summerhill.

After we interviewed Summerhill Neighborhood Association president, Suzanne mitchell, we followed her across the street.  She wanted to listen, in person, as the braves explained why they're leaving her neighborhood after 47 years.

As the news conference ended, she burst into tears as she tried to talk to Braves executive, Mike Plant.

"First I was in denial, now I'm kinda angry," said Carla Smith, Atlanta City Council.

Atlanta City Council member, Carla Smith doesn't feel fine at all.  She represents the neighborhoods around Turner Field and is furious the entire deal was kept a secret from her.  She didn't know until we told her about it.

"I feel like I've been kicked in the stomach.  I'm worried about the neighborhood.  I just can't believe it," said Smith.

Smith was helping spearhead a plan to turn the site of old Fulton County Stadium into a massive mixed use development project.  Now, no one knows what'll happen to it now.

"How is this going to go into the future and what are we going to do to make sure these communities aren't negatively impacted by them backing out?" asked Feroza Syed, Peoplestown Resident.

So I asked Mike Plant about that, here's what he said.

"We're going to be here another three years.  Our Braves Foundation is a very active contributor around this whole area, and we're going to continue to do that.  So we're not going to Jacksonville, or somewhere out of state.  We'll just be going up the road," said Plant.

"Feels like 50-years after old Fulton County Stadium construction took all the homes that used to be right here, all summerhill is going to get in return is an empty stadium and empty Parking lots," said Mitchell.
