AUGUSTA, Ga. (From GRU Sports Information) – After a dominating season opener yesterday where the Jaguars scored 90 over Tusculum, GRU Augusta fell 91-to-86 to the Anderson Trojans in the final day of the Peach Belt Conference/ South Atlantic Conference Challenge, sponsored by Georgia Regents Universities Health Center Credit Union on Sunday night.
KJ Sherrill won the opening tipoff for GRU (1-1), but the Trojans (2-0) knocked down the first basket of the night and kept the lead. Chandler Hash sunk a three pointer and CJ Gleaton's floater pushed their advantage to six. With 11:32 left in the first half, Hash drained another trey for a 19-10 Anderson lead. He ended the first half with 21 points – making three from downtown. Hash finished the game with a career-high 42 points.
The Jags showed signs of life when Harold D0by grabbed an offensive rebound and scored a put-back bucket midway through the half. A wide-open three from freshman Keshun Sherrill brought it within 10, where Anderson stayed for the majority of the opening half. Under a minute on the clock, D'Angelo Boyce and Devonte Thomas knocked down back-to-back threes for the Jags to go into the locker room down 45-to-39.
GRU had seven players with points in the first half, led by KJ Sherrill's nine points and Doby's eight rebounds. To start the second half, Ryan Weems inbounded the ball to Keshun Sherrill for him to drain a 3-pointer to cut it within four.
Thomas sunk a three with a hand in his face to give GRU their second lead of the game at 58-56. The Trojans' Hash continued his work from the perimeter – hitting his fourth and fifth 3-pointers to keep his team on top. Boyce took a charge with 53 seconds on the clock – resulting in a Weems layup and a Keshun Sherrill finger roll, after the Trojans turned it over again.
Down by one with 17 on the clock, the Trojans gave it away on the inbound, but the Jags returned the favor to put Hash on the line where he ended the GRU comeback and kept Anderson on top for a 91-86 victory.
Doby recorded his second double-double on the year with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while KJ Sherrill paced the Jags with 19 points. Keshun Sherrill added 15 points, Weems had 14 and Thomas had 12 to put five Jaguars in double figures.
The Trojans shot 44.6 percent as a team to GRU's 46.6, and made 31 of their 32 free throws. Hash's 42 points led the night, while Myles Daniel added 15 of his own.
Lander defeated Tusculum 84-to-78 in game one of day-two action. The Jags see their first road test of the year on Nov. 16 when they travel to Bowie State for a 4:00 p.m. tipoff.
