Time capsule at UNC gives glimpse of 1988

Posted: Updated:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

So what was life like at the University of North Carolina 25 years ago? A glimpse of that was discovered on the UNC campus Friday, when people opened a time capsule – really, a sealed keg of beer – and poured out mementoes from a quarter of a century ago.

Dozens of people waited to see what was in the capsule, and it turned out they had to wait longer than expected.

The keg wasn't easy to open – heck, getting into the sealed container befuddled the team for more than an hour. But finally, the time capsule was open to reveal:

  • A UNC student identification card
  • A cup from Bub O'Malley,s
  • Copies of Sports Illustrated
  • UNC bumperstickers
  • A glass from the Rathskeller
  • A 45 rpm record
