Hillsborough St. construction could cause problems for businesses

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

A blighted part of Hillsborough Street in Raleigh, across from North Carolina State University, is slated to get some major reconstruction soon. But in the process--businesses say---they may lose customers big time, at a time when they need money the most.

The section of the busy thoroughfare in question has seen better days. A strip of vacant buildings and a dirt lot will eventually give way to a five story 250-unit student apartment complex.

But before that can be done, sewer lines will have to be moved and that means shutting down a busy two block stretch between Dixie Trail and Concord Street.

The work is scheduled to take place when N.C. State students are on winter break. But businesses say it will hurt their bottom line.

At Cup A Joe coffee, a flow of customers means thousands in revenue each day. But with a two-week road closure blocking customers, owner David Sullivan says, he will suffer.

"It hurts. It really hurts," he said Friday.

"It's Christmas season. Good luck selling anything Christmas season with no traffic coming by," he added.

He says he only learned about this closure after hearing it from the news media.

The project's planners have said the two week closure is the fastest option.

The apartment complex meanwhile is slated for completion in 2015.

The closure is slated for late December to early January. There will be detour signs for drivers.
