Domestic Dispute Turns Deadly

Posted: Updated:
North Augusta, SC -

Coverage you can count on begins with an alleged domestic dispute turned deadly.  It happened Wednesday afternoon at a home on Sudlow Lake Road. That's in North Augusta off Ascuaga Lake Road.  Deputies say Chris Rowley died after being shot in the neck after an argument. On Thursday, his girlfriend, Robin Herndon went before a judge for a bond hearing in Aiken County.  Dee Griffin was in court today. She has a closer look at what happened moments after the shooting.

Robin Herndon is in jail after a judge denied her bond this afternoon. Neighbors say Robin Herndon and Chris Rowley appeared to be a great couple who were joined in love. But something happened yesterday that resulted in them being separated by death and a chilling 9-1-1 call that sheds light on the dark moments shortly after a shot was fired.

Head bowed, sniffling and speaking barely above a whisper.. Robin Herndon made her first appearance before a judge.

Investigators say the hands cuffed and holding tissue pulled the trigger that ended a life and started a nightmare for Herndon.

"911 Dispatcher: What is your emergency?

Caller: Yes ma'am, I need an ambulance and cops at 721 Sudlow Lake Road there's been a shooting. There's been shots please hurry."

Sudlow Lake Road is a seemingly quiet area. But shortly after two on Wednesday afternoon, something happened inside this house that resulted in Chris Rowley laying outside with a gunshot to his neck and fighting for his life.

"911 Dispatcher: Is the person there that did the shooting?

Caller: Yes. As far as I know. (screaming in background) I don't know. I just know there was fighting and I heard a gunshot and he's down. You need to send somebody now. He is not moving."

Chris Rowley died from his injury leaving neighbors like Sara Benson living with questions over how this could have happened.  Sara Benson lives nearby and says the couple never exhibited signs of trouble. "You'd see them out here cleaning the yard acting like a normal family. It shocked me. It scared me at first. I didn't know if it was a break in. A gentleman told me it was a shooting."

Investigators say Herndon and Rowley had only been dating since March of this year. Rowley moved into Herndon's house shortly after. Now, neighbors, family and friends can only watch and wait to hear why a romance that just began ended so tragically.

Aiken County authorities arrested 40 year old Robin Herndon last night. They say she was employed at the South Carolina probation and parole. In court today, Herndon told the judge that she is unemployed.

Investigators say a handgun was used in the shooting. However, ballistic tests are being conducted to determine if it is Robin Herndon's work issued service weapon.

Robin Herndon is charged with Voluntary Manslaughter.
