Mary Lambert 'cried' watching Kat Robichaud perform on 'The Voice'

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Although she's performed on national television during the MTV Video Music Awards and has had a single chart in the top five on iTunes, Seattle-based singer Mary Lambert said she cried hearing Kat Robichaud perform "She Keeps Me Warm" on "The Voice."

"Oh my God," Lambert said after the performance. "That was absolutely amazing. I cried and I held my heart and I clutched my little pearls. It was amazing, oh my God."

Kat, who hails from Raleigh, performed Lambert's single "She Keeps Me Warm" Tuesday night during "The Voice" live rounds. Kat said she was honored to sing the song for both its meaning and how she applied its message to her relationship with her husband.

"I identify with it so much," Kat said. "I've been very fortunate to have my husband by my side. He keeps me warm.

"The song is about having somebody love you for who you are. And that's all my husband has ever done since the first time that I met him."

Her performance clearly hit a note with her coach CeeLo Green, who appeared to have tears well in his eyes as she reached down to hug a complete stranger in the audience.

"I believe that it's very important that people realize her range," CeeLo said. "I believe this song really represents her heart and soul."

But CeeLo wasn't the only artist who was touched by Kat's performance. Kat's gesture during her performance caught host Carson Daly off guard, and coach Adam Levine said, "That was awesome, I love that."

Lambert, who wrote the song from her experiences as a lesbian growing up in a Christian home, was watching the show from a hotel room with friends when Kat took the stage and said she cried during the performance.

Lambert rose to fame after Macklemore used her "She Keeps Me Warm" hook in their song "Same Love." She later expanded on the hook and released the song as a standalone single.

Kat told Lambert, "I wanted to sing that song in support of equality, of deserving to be loved. Thank you for writing that song."

"Kat, I loved it," Lambert responded. "I want to buy you and your love a margarita -- maybe 10. [I was] so honored you sang it!"

Kat has long been an advocate for gay rights in North Carolina, having stood against an amendment that defines marriage in the state as being between a man and a woman. That passion came through in Tuesday night's performance.
