Downtown Augusta will not be designated a slum area.
Augusta Commissioners voted to remove the phrase from the official documents as they create an Urban Redevelopment Area. The original plan called for 600 acres downtown to be included in the plan.
But, Commissioners voted to narrow that to a handful of parcels downtown including the Augusta Municipal Building, The Depot, Fort Discovery, and the Civic Center complex.
"I think all of those need some revitalization. Let's be realistic, property...of course, we've talked about that at length, we talked about the Performing Arts Center potentially being there, so if it's a potential funding stream, let's take advantage of it," says Mayor Pro-Tem Corey Johnson.
Commissioners must still approve the final draft of the Urban Redevelopment Plan and then hold a public hearing.
