UPDATED ON 6: Highway 1 Reopened And Man In Custody For Homemade Flamethrower

Traffic is back open on Highway 1 in Aiken after initially being shut down because of a man running in the area with what deputies are calling a homemade flamethrower.

WJBF News Channel 6 has learned that deputies were serving papers on a mental health issue on the 700 block of Jefferson Davis Highway at the time. The man fired the homemade flamethrower at a deputy. The deputy was not hit.

Law enforcement used a chemical agent to get the man from the home.

A man is in custody after a scare in Aiken earlier concerning a man running around the area near the Richland Avenue Wal-Mart with a blowtorch.

WJBF News Channel 6 has learned there is a portion of U.S. Highway 1 shut down in Aiken.

We are told the portion Highway 1 that is shut down is between the Wal-Mart shopping center on Richland Avenue at Gregg Highway in Aiken to the New Hope (Greenville Road) area of Graniteville.

Aiken County Dispatch confirms there is a man in the area with a blow torch, and that the SWAT Team is on the scene.
