Giving Your Best: Dot Cofer

Posted: Updated:
Thomson, GA -

She's one of those people who's always doing things for others.

Dot Cofer seems to know everybody in Thomson, Georgia; but even if she doesn't know you, she cares about your well being.

That's why a group of friends and church members started a letter writing campaign to put Dot's efforts in the spotlight.

For 36 years, she has been in chare of a major Health Fair in Thomson, drawing people from surrounding counties. She's also involved in her church, overseas missions, and prison ministry....  which makes her an ideal recipient of the Giving Your Best Award.

"Hey there!"

Dot Cofer has a passion for people.

"We appreciate everything you've done for us." And showing compassion and encouragement to people who are behind bars is one of her greatest contributions to her community.

"It's so rewarding and you get close to the people out there. When you ship em off to prison you hug em and pray that they'll be safe, and when you find out they're getting released the next day you really pray hard, because they've got so many obstacles to face when they get out."

She's the force behind the Health Fair in Thomson, which serves many people who live in rural areas, without easy access to medical care.

Nominator Patricia Smith really admires the work Dot has put into the health fair for more than three decades.

"And I just think she's done a marvelous job pulling in doctors and volunteer help and just getting all areas of our body covered. Her motto is to help other people as much as she can, and if she saves one life, it's all worth is to her. And she has saved several lives."

Dot chimes in, "I like to see them when something clicks in their  mind and they say, 'Oh, I can do that!' that's where I get my joy from."

Her overflowing joy spreads far beyond the peach state. Dot has fallen in love with the people of Honduras, after numerous mission trips there.

"We have several medical people in our church that go with us on the team. That's just the most rewarding thing -even if you don't speak their language- their eyes and their action tell the whole story. and I love 'em to death- really enjoy doing that"
