Kids put engineering skills to the test in First Lego League competition

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Kids from across eastern North Carolina spent Saturday competing against each other with robotic Legos.

South Central High School hosted its inaugural First Lego League Tournament.

More than 150 kids in 6th – 9th grade enjoyed the all day event. Teams spent the morning tweaking and test running their Lego robots through the practice fields. Then in the afternoon the teams took to the stage to go head –to-head against each other.

Pitt Pirates First Robotic Competition Coach, Bill McClung, says this tournament allows students to apply their skills in a fun environment.

"This is a great way to get them involved. They are building things, they are solving problems, doing all the things that scientists do,” said McClung.

The event was sponsored by Sharp Pursuits which is an operational partner run through North Carolina A&T University’s College of Engineering. Tournament Director Shakera Mikell travels the state conducting these tournaments.

“I have plenty of buttons from kids who tell me about their group and organization; so, they are very excited. You see kids really excited about math, science, robots, Legos, and it’s all incorporated into one. It’s like sports for kids who love math. ”

Eleven teams from as far as Wake County competed in the tournament on Saturday.

Event organizers hope to make this an annual event.
