Study: HIgh school athletes more vulnerable to concussions

Posted: Updated:

An extensive study on sports concussions found high school athletes are at greater risk than college athletes.

It found there is a "culture of resistance" among high school athletes to report concussions and following treatment plans.

The National Academy of Sciences study examined information from ER's, the NCAA and elsewhere.

It discovered high school athletes who played football, lacrosse, soccer and baseball were more likely to experience concussions than college-age players.

More specifically, high school football players were almost twice as likely to have concussions as their collegiate counterparts.

The study's author says they don't know if there's an actual increase of concussions in younger players.

He says instead it could be that high school players are more willing to report symptoms.
