Signs of growth are popping up in one local area raising questions about what is moving into the area. There have been rumors that an outlet mall was coming to Grovetown on a plot of land being developed. The land is along Lewiston Road and just off I-20. Dee Griffin went to Grovetown to sort out fact from fiction and get reaction to the newest neighbors moving into the area.
As the trees have been taken down speculation has grown over what will fill this land. While it's a sign of economic growth for the area, people who live nearby are concerned it may impede upon their property and privacy.
The Mill Branch subdivision is a quiet neighborhood tucked away from busy streets. Serena Singer explains, "most everybody knows everybody else. We do neighborhood barbeques, we do neighborhood Halloween parties. We watch out for each other's kids."
Now, they are watching out for the newest neighbor that could bring big business within feet of their homes. Singer says, "It's good progress. But a lot of us bought in this neighborhood thinking that we were told that all of the woods that were back here were going to stay."
Those old woods are gone making way for Columbia County's new cash crop. Development Authority Executive Director Robbie Bennett says it's a sign of growth that is not slowing down. Bennett says, "we're still the 45th fastest growing county in the country which is phenomenal and a great opportunity. With that is going to come more residential growth, more business growth and more retail growth."
Neighbors living in areas surrounding the developments are excited about the growth as long it doesn't wear out its welcome with noise, traffic and crime. "Seeing some shopping a little closer than Augusta would be nice, but I don't want to see it get too big," Singer adds.
Despite local anticipation of an outlet mall coming to the site, property realtor Bobby Meybohm says that's not projected for the land.
