Rare Hybrid Solar Eclipse Early Sunday

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - A rare hybrid solar eclipse was visible in Eastern North Carolina skies early Sunday morning.

It's called a hybrid eclipse because at parts of the trajectory, the sun was completely behind the moon (making it a total eclipse),while for other parts, it was only partially behind the moon (partial eclipse).

For us in Eastern North Carolina, we saw a partial eclipse early Sunday morning. The sun was 47% obscured by the moon as the sun rose.

Since the eclipse happened while the sun is rising, it'll was at a very low height in the sky (around 8 degrees above the horizon) in the east-southeast sky.

When watching an eclipse, be very careful. Never look directly at the sun with the naked eye or through binoculars and telescopes without the proper filters. Regular sunglasses aren't sufficient. The best practices are to buy special filters or welder's glasses; or build a simple pinhole camera.

The hybrid solar eclipse lasted about 45 minutes.

The next partial solar eclipse to be seen in Eastern North Carolina skies will occur October 23, 2014. The next total solar eclipse will on August 17, 2017, where we will be in a prime location to see this event.
