A higher than normal rainfall over the summer caused a lot of problems including widespread flooding. But many folks are still tasting the effects. Dee Griffin is always investigating, searching for answers.
It looks like water, it sounds like water, but Sonny Reece says it doesn't taste like the water he's accustomed to drinking. "If anybody hunts and they use scent spray. You can buy scent spray that smells like soil and that's what it tastes like and smells like," Reece explains.
He noticed the odd smell and taste about a week ago. Since then, hundreds of residents have complained resulting in a closer examination of the area's water reservoir.
Richmond County's water is stored at a reservoir off Highland Avenue after being pumped from the river. Water experts say the problem can be traced to excessive rain over the summer as well as algae. But, there's another theory that could be flooding the local water supply leaving residents with a bad taste.
Augusta Utilities Director Tom Wiedmeier says, "another phenomenon that can happen is turnover in the reservoir where the colder water from the top sinks and it rotates the water in the reservoir and brings up organisms and manganese that can also cause taste and odor issues."
As a precaution, the city has treated area water with non-harmful chemicals and opened hydrants to get the water out of the system. "Once we upped our dosages of the two chemicals then we tried to flush the lines in the areas that were affected worse," says Wiedmeier.
He adds that the water should be better soon. But Sonny Reece says patience with this problem is a lot to swallow. "Like Affordable Care? Is it going to take til the end of November?" Reece asks.
Again, water experts say the water is not bad for your health. Utility workers expect to have the problem flushed out tonight. If you still have problems give the water department a call.. They want to hear from you.
