SRS Employees Affected By ID Theft Incident

Posted: Updated:

AIKEN, S.C. (AP) - Employees at the Savannah River Site are among those affected by a cyber-theft of more than 100,000 identities of past and present employees of the U.S. Department of Energy.

Department spokesman James Giusti confirmed that Savannah River employees had been affected but did not have an exact number.

The Aiken Standard reports that the Energy Department learned about the incident in July and notified employees Oct. 15. Officials say names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth were all compromised.

Employees are being offered free credit monitoring for a year.

The 310-square-mile Savannah River Site once produced plutonium and tritium for atomic bombs. Work there is now focused mostly on research and cleaning up contaminated areas.
