Buncombe GOP official who referred to 'lazy blacks' on 'Daily Show' resigns

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A Buncombe County Republican who made strong comments about the North Carolina voting reform law has resigned as precinct chair, the chairman of the Buncombe County Republican Party told WNCN Thursday.

Henry Mitchell of the Buncombe County GOP called comments by Don Yelton in Wednesday's edition of Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" "offensive, uniformed, and unacceptable of any member within the Republican Party. In no way are his comments representative of the local or state Republican Party."

Mitchell told WNCN that Yelton resigned on a radio show Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. Mitchell said Yelton has been replaced as precinct chair by Michael Cline.

Yelton was interviewed on the 'Daily Show' by Aasif Mandvi. In the interview, Yelton said of a new law curbing early voting, "The law is going to kick Democrats in the butt."

He went on to say, "If it hurts a bunch of college kids who are too lazy to get up off of their bohunkus and go get a photo ID, so be it.

"If it hurts the whites, so be it. If it hurts a bunch of lazy blacks that want the government to give them everything, so be it."

Yelton said people would still be able to vote, as long as they had proper identification.

"I can't believe we have that many stupid people in North Carolina – people that don't know how to follow direction, to go down there and get a photo ID for free at the DMV? Do you want those people picking your president?"

On Thursday, the Buncombe Republican Party issued a strong response, and state party chair Claude Pope called for Yelton's  resignation.

"I have asked for Mr. Yelton's resignation as the precinct chairman of the Buncombe County Republican Party," Pope said. "If Mr. Yelton declines to resign, the NCGOP will immediately initiate the process to remove him from his position.

"I would like to make it very clear that Mr. Yelton does not speak for either the Buncombe County Republican Party or the North Carolina Republican Party."
