RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper has filed a lawsuit against an alarm system company that he says made illegal robocalls to numbers listed on the Do Not Call Registry.

Cooper filed the lawsuit Wednesday against ISI Alarms NC, Inc. and owner William Jason Waller of Iredell County. The lawsuit seeks civil penalties.

More than 1,000 North Carolina consumers contacted the Consumer Protection Division after receiving robocalls claiming that the Federal Bureau of Investigation or State Bureau of Investigation had received reports of recent break-ins in the area, Cooper's  office said in a news release.

The automated message on the robocalls prompted consumers to press a number to learn more about the crimes. The call recipients were then transferred to a call center operated by ISI Alarms and heard a pitch for ISI's home alarm system and alarm monitoring services, the release said. The automated message gave listeners the option to press a different number to stop the calls. Consumers said the option didn't work.  Many of those who reported getting calls had listed their phone numbers on the Do Not Call Registry.

ISI Alarms is no longer operating but the AG's office wants to make sure the company pays for violating telemarketing laws, the news release said. Noelle Talley, spokeswoman for the attorney general's office, said ISI Alarms stopped making the calls and ended its operations in April following warnings that the calls were believed to be illegal.

A call to one telephone number listed for William Jason Waller went unanswered Wednesday night. A second number listed to that name was not in service.

The lawsuit comes 10 years after the Do Not Call Registry was launched to protect consumers from unwanted telemarketing calls.
