MILWAUKEE -

The Milwaukee County Zoo has euthanized a polar bear that became sick.

The zoo says the 28-year-old male bear, known as Willie, was so sick he could not eat or stand. The bear was euthanized Tuesday.

Willie came to Milwaukee in 2011 from the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro as a temporary guest while his exhibit was renovated. He served as an animal ambassador for Polar Bear International, a conservation organization.

The Milwaukee County Zoo's curator of large mammals, Tim Wild, says veterinary staff members found fluid in Willie's abdomen. The zoo plans to conduct a necropsy, which is an animal autopsy.

Willie was born in captivity and had lived in Asheboro since 2002.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/Hdkall ) reports the zoo still has a female polar bear, Snow Lilly.
