Lead poisoning prevention goes global

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, D.C. -

Was your home built before 1978? If so, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is urging you to have your home inspected for lead. The EPA also says your children should be tested too, even if they seem healthy.

This warning comes as Lead Poisoning Prevention Week kicks off. This year, the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint is teaming up with American government agencies. More than 35 countries from across the world will take action and hold public awareness activities during this week.

In the U.S., paint containing lead was banned for residential use in 1978. However, sources of children's exposure to lead from paint can still be found in some older buildings.
