It was time for Luvenia Bates to renew her license plate tag, and when she decided to go, the tag office on Laney Walker Boulevard was it.
"Oh, I've been coming to the tag office for years, even when it was down at the market. This is even better. When I come here, it's in my neighborhood," said Bates.
But, for the Laney Walker neighborhood, this tag office may soon be no more.
The Richmond County Tax Commissioner's Office is proposing closing down the office in the ANIC Building in the 900 block of Laney Walker Boulevard, and moving it to west Augusta to the Publix Shopping Center off Washington Road.
Officials say the move will benefit a majority of the Laney Walker Boulevard office's customers.
"The population that we currently serve in this office...about 70 percent of those taxpayers resides in the 30907 30909 zip code which is where we are looking to move," said Takiyah A. Douse, who is the office's Motor Vehicle Division director.
The Tax Commissioner's Office in the Augusta Municipal Building issues tags, so service will remain downtown, so many customers could benefit from seeing an office open in west Augusta.
"If they already have an office down here then it's redundant to have two I think absolutely it would much more convenient for me," said Preston Moss, getting his tag at the Laney Walker office.
"No, no. I vote no, I want it to stay right here. I'm not a Washington Road person," said Bates.
Closing the Laney Walker office in favor of one on Washington Road could have some in the neighborhood saying the Tax Commissioner is abandoning the Laney Walker area.
"No sir, not at all. Like I said, that we will continue to offer the same services that we offer at this location at the Municipal Building," said Douse.
And, it's not just Laney Walker Boulevard and Washington Road getting caught up in the tag office shuffle.
The Tax Commissioner is also proposing moving the south Augusta tag office from Lumpkin Road to the Bi-Lo Shopping Center at Peach Orchard Road and Rosier Road.
The Tax Commissioner is proposing spending $585,000 to move the Laney Walker Boulevard tag office to west Augusta.
If the Augusta Commission goes along, the move would be made by early next year.
