Cumberland County approves shooting range

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Cumberland County has approved a permit for a shooting range complex.

The board of commissioners voted 4-3 Monday night to approve plans for the TigerSwan Range Complex, an outdoor firing range and training site, The Fayetteville Observer reported.

Kevin West owns property next to the Tigerswan facility and says he's worried about what would happen if a gun were fired in the wrong direction.

"My property is 100 yards from those shooting houses, and we're worried about an accident," West said.

Economic Development Alliance chairman Chris Bostock says said TigerSwan was heavily recruited to be a part of the county as a military contractor.

Real estate broker Keith Barnes said TigerSwan's presence would hurt property values for property owners in the area.

An attempt to delay approval was rejected.

Commissioner Charles Evans asked the other members of the board to consider the neighbors and their homes.

"That's where they go to rest, relax, get away from everything," Evans said, adding that Cumberland County is not just about the military.

But Commissioner Jeannette Council the panel should remember how important the military is to Cumberland County.

"We are a military friendly community, and in the military, you shoot guns," she said.
