Plant Vogtle employees have manually shut down Unit 2 to repair a feedwater pump.

Read the text of a statement sent to WJBF News Channel 6 concerning the shutdown below:

At 11:44 a.m. Tuesday morning, Unit 2 at the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant was manually shut down due to lowering condenser vacuum as work was being performed on a feedwater pump.

All plant systems operated as designed and the unit is stable. There was no radiological release and there were no injuries. Unit 1 continues to operate safely at 100 percent power.

This issue occurred as the unit was returning to service following an automatic shutdown on October 19th due to the loss of excitation from the main generator. Repairs to the generator are complete.

Once repairs to the feedwater pump are complete, employees will focus on bringing the unit safely back online.

One of Plant Vogtle's reactors was shut down over the weekend.

According to a spokesperson from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the reactor was operating at full power, when the Unit 2 turbine tripped and caused the reactor to automatically shut down for safety reasons.

The reactor is in the process of going back online now, and the spokesperson says there was no danger to the public.
