At Daniel Field they still got aircraft, but no air show...
"There's no airplanes running around in the sky, no vehicles running up and down a closed runway. This is kind of unusual for us," says Becky Shealy, of Augusta Aviation. She is also the Boshears Skyfest's hostess.
Since the early 1990's, there's been an air show at Daniel Field this time of year, but thanks to the government shutdown, this year's show got grounded.
So, we had two decades worth of Boshears, but this year is "no-shears". "Well, that's a way to look at it," says Shealy.
And, there's no Boshears to look at for Cathy and Cameron Hern this year. That hurts, because they love it. "The adrenalin, the excitement, it's just really cool because I can't do that. I could never fly like that," said Cathy.
But, if you HAVE to see some flying this weekend, the place to get your fix could be Phinizy Swamp.
"Yes, we are seeing a fly show, yes we are," says Cathy, who along with her daughter Cameron, was visiting the swamp.
Not airplanes but birds at Phinizy Swamp...lots of them in the water and in the trees...and just like Boshears isn't all planes, Phinizy Swamp isn't all birds.
Military displays are always at Boshears and here at Phinizy Swamp, there's an armored vehicle, of sorts. Well, not an armored vehicle really, but a real armadillo, they crawl more than fly, but to see one alive is thrilling.
And, if you like the sense of danger at Boshears, well believe me...you can find that also at Phinizy Swamp. Just ask these gators if you want a death-defying time.
So, what's better...watching the nature show at Phinizy Swamp, or watching the airplanes go at Boshears?
"Air show," said Cameron, with little hesitation.
It's "noshears" this year, but for high flying fun, you can still wing it at Phinizy Swamp.
