Rats, snakes found at Volusia fire stations

Posted: Updated:
VOLUSIA COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - Some firefighters in Volusia County say they have a problem -- snakes, rats and mold have taken over their fire station -- and they claim the county is not doing enough to clean it up.

The union representing Volusia County's firefighters said several of their fire stations are in rough shape.

They said they caught several snakes and rats at Fire Station No. 32 in DeLand.

Photos, provided by the union, show mold and water leaks at stations in New Smyrna Beach and Ormond Beach.

The spokesman for the union claims the county has long dragged its feet on upgrading the buildings.

"They piecemeal it so they wind up spending more money than they would if they just tore it down and built a state-of-the-art fire station," said union spokesman Carl Cusumano.

The county did not respond to WESH 2's attempt to get its side of the story.

The firefighter's union and the county are in the middle of contract negotiations.

However, union says the complaints have nothing to do with their contracts.
