Augusta, GA (WJBF) - It may not be the most iconic trophy in all of sports, but it certainly is one of the prettiest. The Coaches' Trophy (given to college football's national champion) was in Augusta Thursday afternoon and was on display at Television Park.
The trophy's 2 "managers" take it around the country to a different game with national title implications each week. This week that game is in Clemson (for the 2nd time this season) as the third ranked Tigers host 5th ranked Florida State. Fans will be able to get their picture taken with the trophy before Saturday night's game.
The trophy was first created in 1986. Before the BCS started in 1998, the trophy was awarded to the #1 team in the coaches' poll at the end of the season. Since 1998, it has been handed out on the field to the winner of the BCS National Championship Game. There will be a new trophy next year for the winner of the new College Football Playoff.
The football that sits atop The Coaches' Trophy is made of Waterford® Crystal. The trophy is valued at $30,000 and takes three months to produce. The Coaches' Trophy is 34 inches tall and weighs 45 pounds. The ball alone weighs approximately eight pounds.
The Coaches' Trophy is presented by Dr. Pepper. Dr Pepper has been a part of college football for more than 15 years and will once again be giving Dr Pepper fans a chance to win free tuition through the Dr Pepper Million Dollar Tuition Giveaway. Go to DrPepperTuition.com to enter for a chance to win free tuition and an opportunity to compete during halftime at a major college football championship game.
