Roundabouts Planned For 5 Richmond County Intersections

Augusta, GA -

A change could be coming to the intersection of Milledgeville Road and North Leg road in south Augusta. Right now there is a flashing red light and four stop signs there. Officials want to construct a roundabout, but first, they want to hear your thoughts.

Traffic engineers will spend the next several weeks getting input from the public. They hope to build a total of 5 roundabouts in Richmond County. And if all goes according to plan, two roundabouts could be constructed by late 2014.

Although this type of roadway isn't typically used in the Augusta area, traffic engineers say they are becoming more common instead of signalized intersections.

"You're slowing people down, you're making them more attentive. If they come to a circle, they have to pay a lot more attention, you know, looking to yield into the circle," Traffic Engineer Steve Cassell says.

Although people in the area may be unfamiliar with the way the roundabouts work, traffic engineers say roundabouts cause less problems.

"There are hardly any fatalities at a roundabout, nationwide, with how many are going in. Compare that to signalized intersection on Mike Padgett Highway or some place like that, I mean, you're looking at, these things are a huge safety benefit," Cassell says.

Studies by the Federal Highway Administration have shown that roundabouts reduce collisions by 37%, reduce injuries by 75% and reduce fatalities by 90%.

Currently, there is one roundabout in Richmond County, and that's located near the Carmax, but that one is less traveled than the other ones traffic engineers are proposing to build.

Traffic engineers say a roundabout project can cost about a million dollars, and right now, the city has about $2 million dollars to spend on the projects, so three of them may have to wait. The roundabouts will be single-lane, but Augusta could see some dual-lane projects in the future.

"That's a different element of driver. I didn't really want to get to that level of necessary confusion right off the bat. Let's get a couple of single lane roundabouts, get people comfortable using them before we step it up in five to ten years and try to take on a bigger intersection," Cassell says.

Construction on the roundabouts could begin in summer 2014. There will be three more public input sessions on these projects.
