WJBF News Channel 6 has learned that deer hunts at the Savannah River Site that were cancelled due to the government shutdown have now been reinstated.

Read the text of a press release we received below:

The Wounded Warrior and Mobility-Impaired deer hunts for the 2013 season have been rescheduled for Friday, December 6th, and Saturday, December 7th, with the primary hunts rescheduled for Friday, December 20th, and Saturday, December 21st.

This year's hunt program will continue to use a method that involves trained dogs to safely flush out deer and move them towards waiting hunters and safety auditors.

"The Wounded Warrior and Mobility-Impaired hunts provide disabled hunters with the opportunity to do something they love," said Fred Dohse, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC (SRNS) Executive Vice President & COO.  "They thoroughly enjoy themselves, and our volunteers work hard to ensure a safe and successful experience."

The protected government property at SRS offers 150,000 acres of land for participants through a controlled program managed by SRNS personnel under the direction of the Department of Energy.

Historically, hunting to decrease the overall size of the site deer population helps to minimize vehicle/animal collisions on SRS roadways, making annual deer hunt activities a valued part of the site's safety program.

Information concerning this year's hunts will be provided to the general public through postings on the SRS website. Individual letters will be sent to hunters previously selected to participate in the 2013 Deer Hunt Program prior to its being cancelled due to a lapse in federal appropriations.  These letters will contain an invitation to participate in the rescheduled hunts.
