University of Alabama updates Greek community recruiting

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -

University of Alabama President Dr. Judy Bonner released a statement Tuesday updating her school's Greek recruiting. In September, allegations came out in the school newspaper that some sororities denied membership based on race.

In her update Tuesday, Bonner says in part:

"To date, 200 bids have been offered during the past few weeks. 145 women have accepted those bids. 23 are minorities, including 14 African Americans. It is important to note that now 12 of our sororities have African American members and all sororities have minority members. Prior to formal recruitment this fall, the NPC chapters had significant Hispanic and Asian membership as well as members who reported more than one race or ethnicity."

Bonner's statement comes on the same day a Tuscaloosa judge is considering allegations of election misconduct by sororities and fraternities at the University of Alabama. A judge has set a hearing for Tuesday on an election challenge filed by Kelly Horwitz, who lost a Tuscaloosa city school board election in August. Horwitz claims members of Greek-letter social groups got free drinks and other incentives to vote for opponent Cason Kirby, a former student government president at Alabama.

More than 7,000 students belong to fraternities and sororities at Alabama.

Bonner does not mention the allegations of election misconduct in her statement. You can watch here complete video statement from Bonner above.
