After Republican Congressman Bill Young announced his retirement, well-known democrat Alex Sink expressed an interest in the seat.

While she remains undecided, USF St.Pete Political Analyst Judithanne Scourfield Mclauchlan, Ph.D., believes Sink could be a strong contender. “I think a candidate like Alex Sink is what the democrats need to pick up the seat. It’s not just about the numbers, it's about having a really good candidate and I think she's somebody who can hit the ground running, she can bring in national money," said Scourfield McLauchlan, Ph.D.

Sink, a banker, was Florida's Chief Financial Officer in 2006 and lost a close race for Governor in 2010.

One issue: Young's district 13 is in Pinellas County and Sink lives in Thonotossassa. "It may be a concern initially but I think she's going to be able to overcome that when she gets back out there campaigning and talking to folks," said Scourfield Mclauchlan.

If she runs, Sink will face Jessica Ehrlich, among others in the primary.

Volunteers are already shoring up support for the 39-year-old St. Petersburg attorney.

Ehrlich ran against Young last year and lost with 42 percent of the vote.

She says Young's retirement is a game changer. "Hopefully now the real issues that are affecting us will become the one that are the dominant force of the election, that we'll be able to talk about them and debate them and focus on what people here in Pinellas County want in their representative," said Ehrlich.
