"Out There...Somewhere": Seeing Red, Hating it When That Traffic Light Changes In Front Of Us

Augusta, GA -

The red light, we all know what it means...

"It means I don't get out in the middle of the intersection and somebody hits me," said Alice Middlebrook, while stopped in traffic on Alexander Drive.

Without traffic signals, the roads would be battlefields, the pretty green light means keep going, the wind is at your back, but all good things come to an end...

There's no pleading with a red light, there's no negotiation and somebody is going to be the first in line to wait on it. And, when it comes to red lights, this is a case where no one wants to be first.

"Oh yeah, you don't one to have to stop you have to wait," said Ron Merrell.

But, when you are at the top of the stop light line, you have the longest wait possible. It's like ha-ha, the traffic light pixies are mocking you, you should have left home five seconds earlier.

"So, you are like the first line loser of the traffic signal?" we asked Camille McCracken. "Right, yes," she said, with a laugh.

"This light's crazy, it's like three minutes long," said Brad Carlton, while waiting on Alexander Drive.

"That's a frustrating thing, especially when you're on a side street, because you know you're going to wait two minutes to get out," said Augusta Traffic Engineer Steve Cassell, who admits he hates getting caught by the red light and adds he should have a clicker to keep the yellow light on longer.

Many drivers don't like to get caught by the red light. Check out the truck on Washington Road running the light and see what I mean? But, others are not so driven to keep going don't mind the wait, even at the front of the line.

"No reason to get mad, you just got to live with it, just handle it, just handle your business," said Ron Walker.

So, no matter how fast your car goes on green, you're going to face that red light and you're going to wait. But now, with all the smart phones, the wait isn't as bad as it use to be, just make sure you put that thing down when you drive away.
