The government shutdown is affecting the security contractor at the Savannah River Site, Wackenhut Services Incorporated, and its workforce.
Read the text of a release the company sent WJBF News Channel 6 below:
Wackenhut Services Incorporated (WSI-SRS), the security contractor at the Savannah River Site (SRS), have announced furloughs for a portion of its workforce as a result of the lapse in appropriations. The Department of Energy directed the company to ramp down operations to perform only those activities necessary to protect DOE security interests at the site based on the current reduction of site operations.
Those WSI-SRS employees needed to protect DOE security interests and operations at SRS will not be furloughed. Affected employees will be furloughed until Congress acts on a resolution to fund the Department.
As a result of the workforce furloughs, there will be changes to which gates aare open and what times they will be open. Effective at midnight this Sunday, October 13th, Barricade 8 (Road 2 and Highway 125) and Barricade 10 (Road 1 and 1A, Augusta side) will be closed until further notice.
Employees should plan on using alternate barricades during this period.
