"Here at the training shop, we live life according to our gifts..rather than our limitations," says Audrey Murell, the Executive Director of the Augusta Training Shop.
It's a place where few words are uttered. A place where stories are told through eyes and hands. "All of our snowflakes start out with a basket weave," said Cheryl Schmidtbauer, Augusta Training Shop Project Supervisor.
At the Augusta Training Shop, it snows year round in the Garden City. "The snowflakes are a huge meaning to this community because they are made by people who otherwise would be thrown away from society or they would be overlooked," said Murell. Inside the workshop, nothing gets overlooked. Each snowflake, made from scratch, carefully hand-crafted by some of the most special people you'll ever meet.
Chris Kane: "Adrian is very meticulous.""Yes, every one has to be perfect," says Schmidtbauer. Adrian has worked at Augusta Training Shop for 29 years. A tireless worker, Adrian took charge of the snowflake project from day one."He is able to make this on his own and now he shows other people and he instructs other people how to make them," said Murell. "He has blown me away."
"It's like a work of art," says Schmidtbauer. "It's something with his capabilities that he's not able to do other things that people aren't able to do, but he can produce something this beautiful. You can look at it and get pleasure from it."
Chris Kane:" "Alright, so this is the finished project."
"It's a huge achievement for them because it's something that started out as nothing and then it was formed into this beautiful piece of art work," says Murell. To me the snowflakes are artwork because it represents something that is handmade and it's a talent and its something they have to achieve from it being nothing." Made from natural wood, these snowflakes will soon be shipped to customers across the world. When you purchase a Carolina snowflake from Augusta Training Shop, you'll always remember where it came from. "No one will ever be the same and it has definitely snowed in Augusta," said Murell.
