One of the Triangle's biggest towns is about to see a downtown overhaul get underway this week.
Major construction is set to take place in the heart of Cary. From Monday morning until the end of the year, crews are going to be ripping up roads, sidewalks and parking lots all around the heart of downtown.
This is all part of the East Chatham Street Improvement Project which includes the renovation of The Cary, the town's original movie theater, which is slated to open later this year.
It's being billed as one of the crown jewels of Cary's downtown revitalization.
The Cary is close to being rehabbed, but its coming in at a cost that's far more than was originally planned. The initial price tag of about $3 million is now around $6 million.
All the money is coming out of a multi-million dollar fund set aside to revamp the quiet downtown area in an effort to bring in more foot traffic.
Town leaders have told WNCN they could have done a more efficient job budgeting the project.
But this necessary construction and road work is expected Monday through Saturday.
Access to businesses will be maintained the city says, but drivers should expect lane closures between 9 a.m.-4 p.m daily.
