Becky Widener, an Augusta Resident, says "I think it's important that everybody has a plan in case something were to happen."
In case of an emergency, Becky Widener says her family's safety is the most important thing. To do that, she's starting before the storm: planning, preparing, and practicing" -- something she tells me her family has already set in motion on the heels of tropical storm Karen.
"We all go in the closet. We have a place in the closet," Widener explains.
Event organizers tell me in case of emergency, it's extremely important that you and your family have an emergency disaster kit ready with the necessities like a flashlight, a first aid kit and of course food and water.
Mie Lucas, Richmond County Disaster Preparedness Coordinator tells News Channel 6's Tyrone McCoy, "it's a kit that basically has the essentials for you to go."
Lucas says be sure to include important documents along with items like can openers and batteries in your emergency kit like the one here. She says the size of the kit does matter.
"It all depends on what size your family is. Your kit could be as small as a bucket like the one that we're giving away or it could be as big as a Tupperware container," she adds.
Once you've assembled a kit, Lucas says the next step is finding a convenient storage place.
"You want to store it close to the front door, so if you need to leave you can pick up that kit and go. So, even if you have to stay in your home, you're stuck there, you're sheltering in place, it's in that closet," she says.
And after Family Emergency Ready Day, families are ready to weather the storm.
An event Widener says "it's very informational, it gave all the information that we need and how to make a plan for our family."
