Raleigh still trying to collect on parking fines

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

The City of Raleigh continues their attempt at collecting outstanding parking fines. But WNCN Investigates has learned, there is still a ton of cash to be collected.

Nearly two years ago, the city pledged to work harder to go after parking violators who have failed to pay their fines. The punishment would be interception of state income tax refunds--which they say they have done in many cases, and continue to do so.

Raleigh Parking Administrator Gordon Dash said the city currently has 38,397 people who have failed to pay parking tickets.

"These are folks that have so far ignored collections notices," says Dash.

$1.6 million in fines are owed.

From 2012 to today, 22,000 of those violators have been sent to the city's debt collector. So far, $700,000 has been recovered. Meaning hundreds of thousands of dollars are still out there to be collected.

Why hasn't the city recouped it all?

"Its just a long process," says Dash.

The recovered money "Goes right back into parking operations," says Dash.

People have 180 days to pay before their account goes to the debt collectors.

The city says only about 21 percent of violators end up going to debt collectors--the rest pay their fine.
