An alleged Monday argument has led to one man's death and another charged in his killing.
According to Captain Steve Morris, with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, 38-year-old Evans Bernard Walton, of the 300 block of Applecross Drive in Martinez, has been charged in the death of 51-year-old Donald James Blakely, of the 1100 block of Rolland Road, in Harlem.
Investigators say, deputies responded to an apartment on Applecross Drive to find Blakely lying unconscious on the floor of the apartment. Witnesses eportedly told deputies Walton had struck Blakely in the head after Blakely allegedly spit in Walton's face after being called a "drunk". According to the incident report, Walton had fled the scene, but turned himself in to deputies in a building across the street and confirmed he had struck Blakely and that Blakely fell backwards and hit the back of his head on the concrete sidewalk.
Blakely was transported to Georgia Regents Medical Center for treatment, but died late Tuesday night.
Walton has been arrested and charged in Blakelyly's death. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
