Augusta Doesn't Gloat Over Loss Of Bass Pro Shops

Augusta, GA -

Bass Pro Shops may be out of Columbia County, but it's full speed ahead in Augusta for one of it's biggest rivals.

Construction crews have started work on the new 40,000 square foot Cabelas store.

The upscale sporting goods store announced it was coming to Augusta the day after Bass Pro Shops said it was coming to Columbia County.

The two stores were seen as competitors, but Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver doesn't see Columbia County's loss as Augusta's gain.

"It is a disappointment for our community that they pulled out. We've been in the situation where they were coming to Augusta and that didn't happen. It's a disappointment because that would have brought money into the region," says Copenhaver.

Cabelas is scheduled to be completed and ready to open by Spring of next year.
