Authorities say that the boyfriend of a slain SC mother has been arrested in Virginia after the mom and her young daughter were found dead in their home on Tuesday.
Police say the boyfriend, who serves in the US Navy, subsequently confessed to the murders of 26-year-old Ashley Kaney and 8-year-old Riley Burdick, who were found in a Summerville home that Kaney rented with her boyfriend, Jacob Philip.
Kaney, who was reported missing by her mother since Sunday, was originally from Aiken.
Philip, age 22, is an active-duty member of the US Navy, and was arrested on Tuesday night at Virginia Beach, Va., which is his hometown.
Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said that the little girl, Riley Burdock, died from asphyxiation by strangulation. Her death has been ruled a homicide.
The coroner says the results of 26-year-old Ashley Kaney's autopsy is pending toxicology and microscopic tests. Kaney and Riley were found dead in beds in separate rooms of the house.
WCBD learned the owner of the house rents the property and that according to public documents, the two renters listed are Ashley Kaney and Jacob Philip, who are classified as "in a relationship" on Facebook.
Philip works at the US Navy Nuclear Power Training Unit Charleston as an active duty member of the US Navy. Jacob's rank is Petty Officer 3rd Class.
Lieutenant Commander Victor Garza is the Executive Officer of the Nuclear Power Training Unit Charleston. He says his office will support the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office in their investigation.
He was not able to release any information about Philip's status at work, or whether or not he has not shown up for work as scheduled.
Officials say more information will be released throughout the day.
