Stray dogs exposed to rabies after killing raccoon in Cumberland Co.

LINDEN, N.C. -

Cumberland County authorities are warning residents that two stray dogs have been exposed to rabies after killing a rabid raccoon.

The raccoon was picked up on Billy Joe Lane in Linden off of Honeybee and Colliers chapel Roads around 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28.

Someone reported seeing two stray dogs fighting with the raccoon before running off after killing it.

Animal Control does not have a description of the stray dogs, but officers are being sent out to the area to warn residents about the rabies.

This is the 16 case of rabies in Cumberland County this year.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal:

• Immediately wash the wound under running water for at least 10 minutes with lots of soap. Seek medical attention/advice.

• Call Animal Control at 321-6852 Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Call the Sheriff's Office at 323-1500 after 5 p.m., weekends and holidays.

• Go to the emergency room.
